HAIRDRESSERS are revealing some of the “dirty little secrets” of hair salons.
Taking to question and answer website Quora, one user asked: “What are some dirty little secrets of hair salons?” – and they were soon met with an influx of replies.
One hairdresser revealed a rather scary secret known as “pocket curls”.
They wrote: “Pocket curls are when you perform a chemical operation on a client that goes terribly awry, and hair starts to fall out by the handful.
“Instead of coming clean with the client, the handfuls of hair are secreted away into any available pocket, and blown dry and teased up and combed over.
“Pocket curls. The client goes home none the wiser.”
One stylist, called Maria, answered: “The biggest dirty trick (in my opinion) is the shortcuts stylists take to get you finished faster.
“This has always grinded my gears, because I am a bit of a perfectionist.
“Some stylists will rinse hair colour out before the recommended processing time. This will fade faster, and grey coverage will be poor.
“Some will skip toner when the client needs it. They will send people out with orange or yellow hair, because they’re too lazy to tone it.
“Some will give you half a haircut, or skip necessary steps for your haircut. They won’t check for uneven lengths, or tip your head before cutting.
“Some will give you a sloppy blow dry. They do whatever will get you out of the chair quickest, whether it looks good or not.
“Some will give you expensive treatments (upon recommendation or request) and not leave them on long enough. Of course this is to save time, and it’s a huge waste of your money.
“Some will use thinning shears to texturize or ‘thin out’ long hair, instead of manually point cutting or feather cutting the bulk out. This causes split ends.”
And one client, who claimed to have experienced a bad dye job at the hands of a hairdresser, added: “Hairstylists will boast their work and scream in joy when handing you the mirror.
“It is a little psychological trick.
“You will not dare let her down by saying you do not like it and you will not dare question her work.
“Hairstylists will also usually curl your hair because that makes it easier to hide the little mistakes.
“They curl all the little un-blended spots and make it blend in with your other hair.
“Next time you go in for some colour in your hair ask that they straighten it and turn your little ears off when they start commending their own work.”
