THERE’S nothing more annoying than splashing out on a brand new foundation that costs £30 only for it to not match your skin tone.
But beauty buffs should know about a little known secret that there are ways to get your hands on free make-up, simply by asking for a sample.
Benefit, Soap & Glory and Estee Lauder are among the big names who hand out make-up samples, but supplies are limited so you’ll need to know where to find them.
Top names in skincare like L’Oreal and L’Occitane are also known to give away small samples of some of their moisturisers.
There are a few ways that you can get hold of them, including asking in store and requesting them online.
You might not always be able to bag yourself a full size tube of Mac foundation but you can pick up smaller pots, perfect to slip into your handbag for travelling.
So before reaching for your purse to splash out on the latest Givenchy lippy, try these tips to make sure you can’t try something new for free first.
Ask at the beauty counters
Requesting freebies in person can sometimes feel a bit intimidating but it’s something you should definitely take advantage of.
Beauty counters in shops like Boots, Debenhams and House of Fraser often have a few samples put aside for customers who want to try before they buy.
But you should know that the make-up artists don’t hand them out to just anyone – you’ve got to be genuinely interested in the product.
“If you are thinking of shelling out £20-plus on a product, you should always ask for a sample first so you can try it at home first,” said Deepak Tailor, founder of LatestFreeStuff.co.uk
“Skincare brands are more generous than make-up counters. Clarins, in particular, is known for its bounty of freebies.”
Just know, they won’t hand them over if they think you’re in it just to collect the freebie.
Sign up to test the make-up
Big brands will send out free product samples in exchange for your feedback.
Sometimes, they will ask you to send your feedback directly to the company and others ask you share your opinions and reviews on your Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages.
“Make-up and skincare brands are always looking for testers and bloggers to test their products before they release it to the public,” said Deepak.
“So make sure you sign up to all product testing panels from big beauty companies.”
You should be aware that not every brand will take you on as they may be looking to test their products on certain groups, e.g. women aged between 20-25 years.
You can sign up to be a member of Soap & Glory’s ‘Beauty Brigade’ and they will send you products to review.
Skincare brand Elemis offers customers who sign up a chance to test new products before they’re on the shelves.
Feel Unique Pick ‘n’ Mix
Online beauty retailer Feel Unique gives customers the chance to choose up to five free samples a month.
There are over 400 samples from brands like Clinique moisturisers, Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation and Yves Saint Laurent perfumes.
The samples are small – around 1.5ml for a perfume sample and a sache for foundation – but still they can go a long way.
You will have to pay £3.95 for postage and packaging for your samples to be sent home but you will receive a gift voucher worth the same amount which you can redeem in store.
Social media freebies
You may see on your Facebook timeline that brands often give away limited free samples in exchange for liking and sharing the post.
But they’re often hard to come by, difficult to find and they go so quickly.
Websites like Magic Freebies round up all of these offers so you can find them in one place.
Current sample offers include a free 10-day Foundation and Primer sample from Estee Lauder.
Get free make-up when you sign up to something else
Websites like LatestFreeStuff.co.uk and LatestDeals.co.uk round up all the current deals that offer free products you can claim when you sign up to other websites.
In the past, they’ve listed freebies from Chanel, MAC, Estee Lauder, Revlon and L’Oreal, so it’s worth keeping your eye on them.
There’s a huge range of beauty products being handed out for free eg today you can pick up a free Calvin Klein lipstick worth up to £15 if you buy any lipstick through Fragrance Direct through TopCashback.
“There’s a huge range of beauty products delivered straight to homes around the UK,” said Deepak. “You can get lots of cool products including, perfumes, cosmetics, toiletries and hair products. “
“It’s a great chance to try out new or existing brands without leaving the house.”
