I Ruined My Great Hair Trying to Have ‘Good Hair’ – Glamour

I want to be clear: Not every person of color who changes their hair color or texture is attempting to distance themselves, aesthetically or culturally, from blackness. Drastically altering your appearance isn’t an act of erasure for everyone, but it was for me. In my case, I chased the “white” in “white-blond” in a way that turns my stomach now. In college, when I dyed my hair shades of manic pixie pastel, I wanted to look ambiguous. Looking back, I realize when I said “ambiguous,” what I actually meant was “not black.”
