More than 7 million people follow fitness star Kayla Itsines on Instagram, so it’s safe to say the masses are into her look. But the 26-year-old Australian recently revealed her Rapunzel-length hair isn’t actually her own: In an Instagram post, she admits that her hair is fine and short. She goes on to explain that female-pattern baldness runs in her family, and her hair has gotten noticeably thinner as she’s gotten older. It’s why, she wrote, she sometimes wears a clip-in ponytail.
Without hair extensions, Kayla’s hair looks more like this:
Although Kayla’s hair woes weigh on her, she remains upbeat: “I know we all have our own little insecurities, and one of mine has always been my hair,” she wrote.
Female-pattern baldness, a condition in which hair follicles shrink and eventually stop producing new hair, isn’t typically symptomatic of an underlying health issue, according to MedlinePlus. It’s simply hereditary but can also be triggered by aging or hormonal changes.
Although it rarely leads to complete baldness, female-pattern baldness can still affect a woman’s self-esteem, as Kayla knows all too well. “Yes, of course I’m super [self-]conscious about it, and I’ve tried everything to fix it, trust me,” she wrote in her post.
Kayla doesn’t get into details on the treatments she’s tried but she seems to have come around to her reality. “I am at peace with it, and I will not let it rule my life,” she wrote.
As is the case whenever Kayla posts something real, her fans reacted positively. “YOU ARE A TRUE EXAMPLE OF SELF LOVE,” wrote one commenter. “Social media is so often used to show lack of flaws rather than embracing flaws. You are such a role model.”
Several days before opening up about her hair, Kayla dropped another truth bomb pertaining to her “flaws.”
The post above, which features stretch marks you rarely see in Kayla’s selfies, received 161,838 likes with nearly 2,000 comments, making it it her most popular Instagram in ages. FWIW, it far outperformed this seemingly flawless, wider shot of her wearing the same swimsuit:
It’s a beautiful thing when #real garners more likes than #perfection. Are filters the next to go?! 🤞
