Lele Pons Accused of Lying About Donating Her Hair – TeenVogue.com
Donating your hair to help those who’ve lose their own due to chemotherapy treatments (or for other reasons, such as alopecia aerate) is a way to make sure your strands are going to a good cause. It gives many people a chance to feel like themselves again, and organizations like Locks of Love and Wigs for Kids have made it easy to do so.
While many celebs have taken to social media in the past to spread the word, we can’t imagine anyone ever being dishonest about donating their hair. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what some people are accusing social media star Lele Pons of. It all started when Lele posted a (now-deleted) photo on Instagram of herself with a new cropped cut and her friend holding up a long blonde ponytail next to her. “DONATED MY HAIR!!!!” she wrote in the caption. All good, right? Not so much. It didn’t take long for some followers to notice something was off about the photo. If you look closely, you can clearly see that the ponytail is not real hair at all, but rather hair extensions. (You can tell because tracks are visible at the top of the ponytail, instead of freshly snipped hair.)
Naturally, Lele’s fans questioned why she would ever do something like this. “Care to explain how you chopped off your ‘hair’ and ‘donated’ it @lelepons?? Last time I checked you can’t donate extensions,” wrote one user on Twitter. “Lele pons literally pretended to donate her hair when It was extensions and her hair is bleached loool,” wrote another. They were not having it.
Lele took to Twitter a few days later (July 7) to clear things up and offer her own explanation of what happened. She alleged that she did indeed intend to donate her hair, but was not able to because her hair is color-treated. If you visit Locks of Love’s website, the FAQ page states that the organization cannot use hair that has been bleached. That being said, it still remains unclear why she would post the photo in the first place if she was unable to go through with it. However she did add that helping those affected by hair loss because of cancer is still a priority for her and that she’s looking into other ways she can help.
