Oskar Eustis reminisces about ‘Hair’ – Page Six

The Public Theater performed musical hit “Hair” during a benefit at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Artistic director Oskar Eustis gave his personal story about the musical, which first opened at the Public in 1967, saying, “When I was 14 years old, which was 1972, I had run away from home … and found myself in London. I had nothing to do with the theater to speak of, and I was as disaffected and alienated and angry as a young teenager can get. Somehow I ended up with a ticket to ‘Hair’ [in its West End production] … I watched the show and I got up onstage and danced, and although I couldn’t have articulated it then … I was beginning to feel, actually, maybe there is a place in this society for me.”
