Uncombable Hair Syndrome Is a Rare, Genetic Syndrome — and This Little Girl Has It – Allure Magazine
Raise your hand if you’ve ever had a hair moment so frustrating you thought there literally must be something wrong with your unmanageable strands? Yeah, us too. But while most of those bad hair moments are temporary (and rectifiable with the right hair-care routine), there is an actual medical syndrome that makes hair literally impossible to deal with: Uncombable Hair Syndrome.
“Uncombable Hair Syndrome is a rare condition,” says Sejal Shah, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “it is usually characterized by silvery-blond or straw-colored hair that is disorderly; stands out from the scalp; and cannot be combed flat.”
Classified as a rare genetic disorder, this is more than a case of unruly or tangled hair — it’s truly impossible to manage. Overzealous efforts to subdue the unruly strands often just lead to breakage. Ouch. “Oils, leave-in conditioners or anti-frizz products may temporarily tame the hair but they usually don’t work long,” says Shah. “Biotin supplements may be helpful. There has been a report of them helping improve manageability.”
So how rare are we talking? “Approximately a 100 cases have been reported in the scientific literature,” says Shah. But there are likely cases that have gone undiagnosed or reported, she adds, since children with Uncombable Hair Syndrome often magically grow out of it. “For unknown reasons, the condition is often resolved or improves with the onset of puberty.”
Luckily, the syndrome has a champion who is making all our hair troubles seem like NBD: 7-year-old Shilah Calvert Yin.
According to the Daily Mail, Shilah is totally unfazed by her hair. “It’s not ordinary and it’s not boring like everyone else’s,” she said. “I think my friends wish they had hair like mine.”
Shilah’s embrace of her texture is downright badass. Let that ‘tude be a lesson to all of us the next time we’re ready to throw a comb out the window while trying to tame a bad hair day. No matter what, no one has hair like yours and that’s pretty damn cool.
