Woman Embraces Grays in Epic Hair Transformation – Allure Magazine

Unicorn hair is just about everywhere, and folks are bleaching their manes to embrace rainbow-hued locks. It’s a long process that yields gorgeous results, but one particular hair transformation we spied on Instagram is inspiring us right now in a major way.

San Francisco hairstylist Rachel Stefanik posted a video to her Instagram page showing an amazing dye job she did on a client with gorgeous gray hair. Stefanik explains that her client hadn’t had her hair colored in 25 years. It’s clear that after such a long time she was ready to go bold… really bold.

The video shows parts of the process from the client’s original gray mane to when Stefanik applies the color, which includes deep purple shades and matching highlights. But possibly the best part about this hair transformation is that Stefanik left some of the grays out, letting her client’s natural color shine. “Both of us really loved her natural gray hair and we wanted to incorporate it for dimension,” Stefanik told Allure. To achieve the color, she used several hues of Pulp Riot dyes, in Mercury, Lilac, Blush, Fireball, Cupid, Jam, Velvet, and Powder.

“I used Colortrak balayage film to separate each section. In total, it took me about an hour and a half to apply the color and 30 minutes to process. Then I gave her a haircut and style.” Stefanik says it took around three and a half hours to complete the hair transformation. And the results? Well, they’re obviously fantastic.

If you’re gray and thinking of adding color, Setfanik has a few smart tips for making sure your hue stays vivid and bright for as long as possible. “I recommend that you only wash your hair once or twice a week with purple shampoo. I really like Pravana The Perfect Blonde shampoo. Always use cold water when washing with vivid colors!” Stefanik mentioned that her client’s hair will fade to pastel as she washes it and that in two months she should get a touch-up — something to keep in mind if you’re planning on turning your grey strands into unicorn locks.
