Your ultimate holiday hair guide – Telegraph.co.uk
For those who don’t want hat hair, there are SPF sprays, which if spritzed liberally and regularly can provide ample protection. Try Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil, £22.50, and L’Oréal Professionnel Solar Sublime Advanced Protection Conditioning Spray, £12.30, for lightweight, non-sticky protection.
Expert colourist and L’Oréal Professionnel ambassador Jack Howard also has an easy DIY trick: ‘Buy an SPF 50 lotion, pour a teaspoon into a small travel spray bottle, add hot water and shake.’ If you wear your hair with a parting, you might want to consider applying a line of water-resistant sunscreen to the scalp, as it’s incredibly sensitive and can burn easily.
Better beach styling
Those loose, windswept beachy waves might look good, but if your hair is naturally straight it might be worth giving them a miss. Using salt spray will dehydrate your hair and could leave it dry and crispy. Instead, opt for quick, easy styles that work with your natural texture. A simple French braid is a good option if you’ve got mid-length-to-long hair, as are high buns and ponytails, especially if you prefer to keep your hair off of your face and neck.
When it comes to the texture and finish of your hair, it is worth considering more of a wet look. Admittedly, it’s not a finish many of us are willing to explore usually, but on holiday it’s definitely one to try. Use a hydrating hair mask, such as Kérastase Soleil Masque UV Défense Active, £21.10, and comb your hair back into a bun or high ponytail. Using a comb rather than just your fingers will keep it looking chic rather than greasy.
Hairstylist and L’Oréal Professionnel editorial ambassador Adam Reed is also an advocate of the wet look, especially if you want to protect your hair colour. ‘Most people know that chlorine can change the tone and colour of your hair, but sea water can have the same effect,’ he explains. ‘The higher mineral content means that there’s more risk of your blonde going green. Run your hair under the shower before you get into the water and smooth L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil, £16.49, through it for protection.’
