YouTube star slammed for lying about donating her ‘hair’ to charity – New York Post

A social media superstar is facing backlash from some of her 18 million followers after bending the truth about donating her hair to charity.

YouTuber LeLe Pons, 21, came under fire when she shared a snap to Instagram last week of her freshly cut locks and captioned the post “DONATED MY HAIR !!!!”

But given her large following, it wasn’t long before fans pointed out that the hair being held in the photo appeared to be extensions.

“Care to explain how you chopped off your “hair” and “donated” it @lelepons?? Last time I checked you can’t donate extensions,” tweeted fan Emily Graceffa, who claimed she was blocked by the vlogger after calling her out.

Pons, who got her start on Vine, deleted the original photo from all of her social media accounts. She responded Friday to the controversy in a series of tweets.

“To help clear up any assumptions, I cut my hair with the intention of donating it,” she wrote. “Sadly after trying, I learned charities who donate wigs don’t accept color treated hair.”

The YouTube sensation told fans that she plans to find other ways to help people affected by hair loss.

On Saturday, a source defended her post to BuzzFeed News claiming that the extensions used in the photo were supposed to be a “reference” to how much hair she chopped off.

“It was never intended to pass off extensions as real hair,” said the source, who did not want to be identified.
