Thousands of make-up fans were left disappointed after lining up for hours to try their luck at getting their hands on a free lipstick.

MAC cosmetic gave away free lipsticks to celebrate National Lipstick Day on Saturday, but according to social media, very few actually managed to get a free tube of lippy. 

The promotion with no catch left many MAC fans furious after they lined up for hours and left empty handed.

‘I wasted a 25 minute drive. I won’t be buying MAC again, I’ll be buying Revlon instead,’ one customer posted to Instagram. 

‘Pretty cheap promotion honestly. Would think an international brand like this could afford more then 40 lipsticks per store. Badly implemented,’ another said.

‘Well after being a loyal MAC customer for years I am now spending my hard earned money with another company as MAC has lost me forever,’ someone posted. 

While many makeup fans gave up after one store sold out, others were seen trying their luck at a number of stores.

‘Went to so many places today to try and grab a free lippy, but alas absolutely none!!! After five stores (I) gave up,’ a customer posted. 

Hundreds of social media users took to Instagram to share their anger with how the promotion was handled by staff, some people saying staff filmed the rush instead of providing order to the stores. 

While some enjoyed the lipstick frenzy and cheap coffees nearby cafes were offering, other less satisfied customers posted about ‘rude staff’ and frustration with not even being able to step foot into the store to even buy a lipstick.

‘So so disappointed MAC!! I woke up super early 33 weeks pregnant and with a toddler at foot, drove the 45 mins into the shop before it opened! To wait in line for my lipstick and was turned away, seeing a girl walking away with two (lipsticks) was the icing on the cake … surely there’s something you can do for your loyal customers that went to the effort to be disappointed so badly,’ one customer posted to Instagram.

Despite the bursts of outrage towards the Toronto-founded cosmetics manufacturer, the lucky people to nab a free MAC lipstick were happy.  

MAC cosmetics apologised to unhappy customers on social media and thanked the people who visited their stores to celebrate International Lipstick Day with them.

While MAC cosmetics were sorry for running out of their popular lipsticks, which cost $36 a pop, they said they were overwhelmed by the response. 

All people had to do was sign up to MAC cosmetics and follow them on Instagram to receive a lipstick bullet, but many stores had limited numbers.
