Ah, men.* So often thinking that everything women do revolves around them.
*Yes, yes, not ALL men. Just some. Okay?
It turns out that many men don’t only think that women are wearing makeup for their benefit (a common belief), but the majority actually believe that women wear makeup to trick men into thinking they’re attractive.
A survey from YouGov found that 63% of men believe that the main reason women wear makeup is to trick people into thinking they’re attractive.
Because apparently, applying a contour and dark red lipstick are such sly, sneaky measures to take upon our faces that men believe they have been deceived into finding us fanciable. The horror.
To be fair to men, 47% of women also reckon the main motivation for wearing makeup is to trick people. So it’s quite a common view.
Which is a shame, really. Wearing makeup isn’t deceptive or a form of trickery. It’s very often a way for people to express themselves (the same way they do through fashion) or to flatter their face – which isn’t the same as deception, FYI.
On a related note, 43% of people think women wear too much makeup, while 53% of women strongly agree that the media holds them to unrealistic beauty standards.
So we’re screwed if we do wear makeup, screwed if we don’t. We essentially have to be naturally perfect to avoid any judgement.
It all boils down to one simple notion: far too many of us are finding fault in other people’s appearances, whether they’re choosing to put makeup on their face or are going bare.
Can’t we just lay off, stop judging, and let people wear the lipstick, eyeliner, or bronzer their heart desires? We reckon if we did, the world would be a much better, sparklier place.
