Rihanna Celebrates Diversity with New Makeup Line – The Mass Media

Rihanna’s new makeup line, Fenty Beauty, is here for diversity in an industry that doesn’t always celebrate the concept. Traditionally, there is a lack of variety in makeup options for melanin-rich individuals.

At midnight on Sept. 8, 2017, the artist released her long-awaited makeup line, Fenty Beauty. The worldwide release of the artist’s beauty products have been the talk of the town recently, and for good reasons. So far, all of the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, with people from all walks of life giving the products their stamp of approval.

The release of Rihanna’s new beauty products have highlighted a very important and often hushed issue within the industry—the lack of diversity in these products. Let’s all admit it, have you ever been in the makeup aisle of the supermarket, CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, or wherever? Have you seen the huge variety of shades for people with fairer skin tones but the restrictive options for people of color? If you happen to have a darker skin tone, it is hard to find makeup that matches you. Some have expressed that this is so because people of color do not really buy makeup and this is why it is not readily available for them. Fenty Beauty has proven that this is definitely not true, as shortly after their products were made available for customers, the foundations aimed toward people with darker skin tones sold out. So, if there isn’t a demand for makeup that matches people with darker skin tones, why did the Fenty Beauty products geared towards this group sell out? Could it be that there is definitely a demand for makeup that fits people with darker skin tones, such as myself?

Let’s face it, one size doesn’t fit all and Rihanna has proven that with her new beauty line. The line features about 40 different shades of foundations. This clearly shows that Rihanna understands the need for more diverse shades, not just for people with darker skin tones, but even those on the paler end of the spectrum. Fenty Beauty also features makeup products that are suitable for people with albinism—a congenital disorder that is characterized by little or no production of the pigment melanin.

For people of color, finding makeup that matches your skin tone completely is very hard. The makeup industry isn’t very diverse. Women of color have a hard time finding makeup that matches their tone exactly, leaving some to settle for a shade that’s either lighter or darker than their skin color. Even though a lot of brands are adding darker shades to their lines, it is still not enough and this is where Fenty Beauty gets it right. They have shades to fit everyone, from those of the fairer end of the spectrum to those on the darker end and also those in between!

Diversity in makeup is important and thankfully Rihanna acknowledges this with her new makeup line. To make things better, Fenty Beauty is reasonably priced as well. You can get a Profilt’r foundation for a little over $30 and their highlighters are also in this range.

I am sold on the new Fenty Beauty line. As much as I am an amateur when it comes to makeup, I am definitely going to get some of their products and hopefully learn how to do a decent job at makeup.

As Fenty Beauty introduces its huge array of foundation shades, rival makeup brands, out of the blue, have started marketing their products that are geared toward people of color, specifically those with darker skin tones, which is something that was often neglected in the past.
